One of the things I think works really well for kids birthday parties...especially the ones that are not at home, are to make a cake with matching cupcakes. That way, all the kids have something easy to eat, but you still have a cake to do the candles with and maybe take home for the family party later.
So this week it is Spiderman. I started out earlier in the week making the add-ons for the cupcakes. If you do all this before hand, then you can make the actual cake as close to the party as possible. Assembly only takes a minute!
I started by rolling out the fondant and getting all my icing, made before hand.

Cut out all the circles with a small cookie cutter.

I made eight little spider legs and the head with black icing. Then took a black M & M for the body. It gives it a little dimension which looks nice.

Once they are all made, you can set them aside until you are ready to put them on the cupcakes.

The cake was pretty easy to make. It is just chocolate cake with vanilla butter cream which is dyed blue. I made some fondant buildings to put around the side of the cake. I decided to put some spiders on the cake so I could carry the theme over from the cupcakes.

I made sure that when I made the icing for the cake, I made enough to pipe onto the cupcakes too. That way you can be sure that it is the same color (instead of trying to match it later which is always a pain) You put the spiders on that you made earlier, and you are all done!
